Kostas Sfikas (1927–2009) was a pioneering Greek filmmaker and visual artist whose iconoclastic cinema dissected the mechanisms of representation, the spectacle of capitalism, and dominant culture. His three Allegories (1986, 1993, 2002) and groundbreaking Model (1974) — part of the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris — were featured at Biennale 9. Sfikas grappled with the pitfalls of representation and the shackles of narrative ritual, raising "a nightmarish mirror" in front of the world.
